How long does 200 mg of caffeine last?

Two hundred milligrams is a perfectly ordinary caffeine dose. It is roughly the amount found in two modest cups of brewed coffee, one strong café drink, or some energy and pre-workout products. Yet the stimulating feeling and the caffeine remaining in your body are not the same thing. You may stop noticing the buzz while a meaningful portion of the original dose is still being processed.

Using a five-hour half-life, a 200 mg dose falls to about 100 mg after five hours, 50 mg after ten hours, 25 mg after fifteen hours, and 12.5 mg after twenty hours. It does not suddenly switch off at any of those points. The amount declines continuously, and the five-hour marks are simply convenient snapshots of that curve.

In everyday terms, 200 mg can remain relevant for much of the day. If you take it at 9 AM, the same model estimates roughly 29 mg at 11 PM. If you take it at 2 PM, it estimates about 57 mg at 11 PM. Those are mathematical estimates rather than measurements, but they show why dose and timing have to be considered together.

A 200 mg caffeine timeline

Why your personal result may be faster or slower

After ten hours, a 200 mg dose would be estimated at roughly 20 mg with a three-hour half-life, 50 mg with a five-hour half-life, and 74 mg with a seven-hour half-life. The slower scenario is more than three times the faster estimate even though the starting dose is identical.

How long will you feel 200 mg?

The half-life curve cannot tell you exactly how long you will feel alert. Perceived effects depend on tolerance, sleep debt, expectations, food, dose pattern and sensitivity. Someone who regularly consumes caffeine may notice less stimulation than an occasional user, even though both still have caffeine in their bodies. Conversely, a sensitive person may notice restlessness from a residual amount another person barely detects.

This distinction matters when planning sleep. “I can fall asleep after coffee” is not necessarily the same as “coffee has no effect on my sleep.” In a controlled study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, a substantial 400 mg dose taken six hours before bedtime still disrupted sleep. That study used a larger dose than the 200 mg discussed here, so it should not be treated as a direct prediction; it does demonstrate that effects can extend beyond the obvious buzz.

What time should you take 200 mg?

There is no universal latest time because your bedtime and preferred residual level matter. Work backwards. If you go to bed at 11 PM and take 200 mg at 9 AM, fourteen hours elapse and the five-hour model gives about 29 mg. Taking the same dose at noon leaves about 44 mg. At 3 PM, about 66 mg remains. Moving the dose earlier can matter as much as reducing it.

Use those values as a personal experiment rather than a medical cutoff. Record dose, time, bedtime and how you slept for a week. Then move the dose earlier or reduce it while keeping the rest of your routine reasonably consistent. A sensible takeaway
